home after graduation to find that a boisterous Catholic family from New York City had moved in next door. The old Simpson place, an aging, rambling farmhouse, which had always
struck Allen as looking rather sad and lonely when the elderly Simpsons lived there, was now a riot of life, overflowing with children of various ages. Having had only
one child herself, Allens mother had some pointed things to say about the fecundity of her new neighbors and Catholicism in general. Allen, having always been a dutiful son, agreed
with her. It never occurred to Allen to disagree with his parents, or with anyone in authority, for that matter. It was soon clear that his parents had not mentioned
the ONeil family moving in next door because they had no intention of having anything to do with those "Yankees." Yet, while Allen accepted the notion that he should be
repulsed by their "abrasiveness" and "vulgarity" (his fathers words), he was also fascinated and found himself frequently trimming the hedges that separated their properties, so he could secretly watch Mr.
ONeil play touch football with his many offspring. On a fateful Friday afternoon, Allen turned down the country lane that led to his house and saw smoke. His heart
