All cultures have fashioned their own accounts of how the world and the life that it houses came to be. These creation
myths most often form the basis of the cultures religion. While there are distinct differences, there are often many similarities between the creation myths of even widely diverse cultures.
Such is the case for the Yoruba of Nigeria and the Hindu people of India. Both Hindu and Yoruba culture stretch far back in time. The Yoruba,
for example, can be traced as far back as 300 B.C. yet still form a major component of the Nigerian population (Rosenberg, 1994). The Hindu culture, of course, is
an ancient culture as well. The creation myth that will be examined for the purposes of this paper dates to between 300 and 500 A.D. (Rosenberg, 1994).
The creation myths of these cultures each feature several major gods. Both the Hindu gods and the Yoruba gods are sympathetic to
the human condition, they are personable individuals who care not only about themselves but also about the people in their charge. The Yoruba gods Olorun, Orunmila, Obatala, Olokun, and
Eshu alike have many powers. The Hindu gods, in turn, represent the concept of reincarnation (Rosenberg, 1994). Vishnu, for example, has three distinct forms (Rosenberg, 1994). These
are Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva-Rudra (Rosenberg, 1994). For the Hindu Brahma is the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva-Rudra the destroyer
