of Eden and also how the first man and woman were created, Adam and Eve. The Koran records a very similar story in verses 2:28-2:38 of the Sura 2 and
also, as does Genesis, records the downfall of humanity as being attributable to the influence of Satan. However, the two texts differ on a specific and very important point, which
historically provided a Christian rationale for the subjugation of women. An analysis of these passages shows the importance of the differences between these passages. Both the Koran and the
Book of Genesis indicate that God told Adam specifically that he and his wife were not to eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. The Koran says in 2:35
that God told Adam to live with Eve in Paradise, and "eat therefrom generously, as you please, but do not approach this tree, lest you sin." Likewise, Genesis 2:15-17 says
that God told Adam, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,
for when you eat of it you will surely die." Up until this point the creation stories are extremely similar. They both picture the first man and woman, as
Adam and Eve, in the Garden of Eden and God as Creator. However, at this point, with the intervention of the devil, there is a crucial different. The details of
the Fall are well known to Christians. Satan, in the form of a snake, deceives Eve and persuades her to eat the forbidden fruit. Eve then persuades Adam to do
this as well. God punishes them both for disobeying him and in Genesis 3:17 specifically tells Adam that his punishment stems from having listened to Eve, "To Adam he said,
