1. Introduction For businesses to be successful there is the need to set goals and targets
and then to measure their performance against those targets. It is only by measuring performance that the level of achievement can be assessed and areas weakness minimised whilst strengths are
built upon. Performance measurements can take place in a number of ways; these may include financial goals, productivity measures and general benchmarking. Without any system of appraisal it is impossible
to tell how well, all poorly, a company is performing (Mintzberg et al, 2003). The range of measures broad, but it may be argued that the use of larger measures
is wasted if they take place at only corporate level. For a company to meet its goals it is highly advantageous for it to maximise all of its resources. A
major resource of any organisation is that of the employees. Therefore, as well as organisational wide measures, it is important that there are smaller measures or appraisal systems to assess
the way in which performance is taking place and how it may be bettered. Employee performance assessments can provide a great deal of opportunity for the employer. By assessing employee
performance opportunities to improvement may be identified at both individual and organisational levels, general patterns may be observed, and the use of the system which interacts employees can also be
one source of motivation, depending upon the type of tool used and how it is implemented (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 2003). Overall, performance appraisal systems can be of benefit to the
