extensive linguistic, environmental and sub-cultural differences. As modern archeology gradually confirms the ancient records of this countrys earliest times, it seems that however far back one goes, Chinas history is
essentially the saga of its dynasties -- a succession of warring rulers who ultimately differed only in the degree of their autocracy (Green, 1991). In 1987 the standard
of living in China was much lower than in the industrialized countries, but nearly all the Chinese people had adequate food, clothing and shelter. In addition, there was a
positive trend toward rapid improvements in living conditions in the 1980s as a result of the economic reforms, though improvements in the standard of living beyond the basic level came
relatively slowly. Now, to say that starting a business in todays economy is tough is the height of understatement, since anyone
with even a modicum of business savvy knows that any number of factors can go awry. Therefore, getting a business up and running in a foreign country such as
China can be deemed tantamount to an exercise in sadomasochism. There is a plethora of variables to consider. Moreover, add to this the fact that the nations
