an inherent problem in trying to create a utopia: everyones idea of what it is, is different. Time magazine suggested that the basis for a utopia is an educational system
that leads the way to a consensus on how the society wants to live (How to create Utopia, 1956). Ambrose suggests that the gifted should be societys leaders (2008), while
Friess reports that in the U.S. there is actually a movement to establish a utopia that would be located in Wyoming or New Hampshire and would feature massive privatization of
almost all services (2003). These conflicting visions show just how difficult it is to create a utopia. Its therefore up to the student to decide what issues in todays world
keep it from being utopian, and create an alternate reality in which these problems have been solved. Lets assume, then, that the student is suddenly transported from today into utopia.
The first thing he notices is that the air is fresh and clear and the water is sparkling clean. The Utopians, unlike people today, have understood that global warming is
serious - indeed, that we are on the brink of destroying ourselves - and have done something about it. They are using solar and wind power almost exclusively, with the
result that the environment is recovering. There are a lot of people walking, riding bicycles or using public transportation, which in this Utopia is mostly solar-powered light rail. Most long
distance travelers use mag-lev trains, which float along a magnetic track at speeds up to 300 miles an hour or more. The mag-lev is completely silent and non-polluting, and so
