Fitness Center is a for-profit organization that also works in partnership with several area hospitals to provide cardiac and strength conditioning for patients referred to the Center. Customers referred
by hospitals and those seeking its services on their own all search for the same results: better health and an enhanced feeling of well-being attained through physical activity. The
fitness center is open to any seeking a membership, which is billed on a monthly basis and requires no membership commitment beyond an initial 90 days.
To date City Fitness information system has been limited to business needs only, and in the most traditional meaning of the phrase. Systems for membership and
finance are extensive and quite useful for staff, but it is virtually nonexistent for customers and those seeking to track progress. The purpose here is to devise an information
system that will assist City Fitness Center in marketing its services and measuring the results current members gain through use of the facilities. Current Situation
As stated, City Fitnesss administrative information system is extensive and quite adequate for managers needs. It is integrated with the larger health system information system and directly
communicates bilaterally with the parent organizations financial, quality, human resources and other common area departments. Its internal information system falls far short of meeting its full potential, however.
Upon joining and committing to at least 90 days membership, new members are given keytags bearing a magnetic strip and a barcode. This
is the primary means of accessing the facility, though members also can gain access by providing the desk attendant with their name, address, telephone number or other identifying information.
