that they properly represent the company. That is, they must be well groomed, well mannered and so forth. They also need to know some things such as how to operate
the cash register, interact well with customers and they must be knowledgeable about the products being sold. Howard (1998) confirms that fact that customer orientation is important: "The reputation of
any organization is determined by four factors: First, the quality of your products and services. Second, the commitment and customer orientation of your employees. Third, the mission and values of
your organization. And fourth, the consistency and relevance of your communications, outside and in" (p. 15). In the case study assignment submitted by a student, one has to design a
three day training and orientation program for new sales clerks. Because the program will be designed for all new employees, and they will come from different locations, it is important
to choose a venue where all employees will have access. In some cases, when the location is far from the department store, carpooling should be encouraged. If the logistics become
too complex, it might be prudent to hire a bus for the new workers for problem locations. The orientation should take place prior to the commencement of any work. In
some cases, when orientation will begin perhaps a week after the date of hire, the employee can begin working. However, it is important that they begin training towards the start
