history the mentally ill have long been misunderstood and abused in many different ways. However, many like to envision that the society has become more enlightened about mental illness, moving
further away from simple institutionalization and into a more modern way of thinking. In Pete Earleys work, Crazy, it becomes clear that the society is not enlightened about mental illness
and that the culture still has a long way to go in order to properly address and treat the mentally ill. The following paper offers a summary and analysis of
Earleys work. Crazy by Pete Earley This work is about Earleys son, a young man who suddenly found himself experiencing serious mental illness. The story essentially revolves around his
sons breaking into someones home, trashing it and taking a bath. His son was incarcerated as a criminal, not helped for his condition. Throughout this work Earley examines his own
struggles with his sons problems as well as presenting how society does not offer any true help to the mentally ill. He illustrates how all too often the mentally ill
are simply put in jail or prison, how they are abused, and how the parents of adults with such mental problems have no power at all to help their children.
In essence, Earley lays out many facts that people do not know in relationship to the problems with society and the legal system in terms of helping the mentally ill.
In terms of analysis, and personal reflection, it came as no surprise to this reader that the society does little to truly
