The crawl-walk-run approach has been used for decades in military training, it is like a motto that could be based on a phrase we often hear in life - you cant run before you can walk. This is a philosophical approach as well as a practical approach to development. It also has great application in change projects as well as in developmental and training programs. During the crawl cycle, individuals do things slowly and in a very methodical way (Kinney, 2008). The novice performs each single step in the process that has been taught. The instructor has explained and even demonstrated specific steps to learn something so the learner has both instruction and demonstration upon which to rely when he or she attempts to perform that activity. The crawl events are simple for the trainee to do (Global Security, 2005). The individual does not need very much supervision to correctly perform these early steps (Global Security, 2005). Dan Lynn (2004) is a small business owner who adopted the crawl-walk-run approach to running his business. Peers told him he should be more aggressive in order to achieve success (Lynn, 2004). He preferred to follow what he had observed in other companies he worked for, begin slowly (Lynn, 2004).
