gaining knowledge and skills in a progressive manner. The crawl-walk-run approach to training has been used in military training for decades. The literature seems to especially identify the approach with
training in the Army. There is an old adage that we often hear, you cant run before you can walk. This makes obvious theoretical sense. In education, there is a
practice called task analysis. What that means is that each step in performing a task is analyzed to assure essential information or skill is not omitted in learning the whole.
Everything new that we learn is based on past knowledge and experience along with learning new knowledge and/or skills. The crawl stage begins with self-awareness. An infant becomes aware
of himself, how his movements or sounds have results, for example, the infant is hungry, cries, and mom or dad feeds him. The infant becomes aware of a cause and
effect outcome. When infants begin moving, they crawl to get from one place to another. Very few infants begin mobility by walking, they first crawl. The same premise is true
in learning and developing leadership skills. in this stage, students must be given very explicit lessons and directions to learn very basic knowledge, such as what is a leader, what
are leadership characteristics, what do leaders do? Kinney (2008) says that at the crawl stage in leadership development, the individual does the task very slowly and very methodically. Instructors
