the points the authors make in the book. Discussion As noted above, the main point of the book is that manufacturing processes are often wasteful but thats all right, as
long as everything used in the process returns to nature, or the products that are manufactured use up everything (McDonough and Braungart, 2002). They use an example of a cherry
tree as this sort of acceptable waste: the tree blooms each year, then the flowers fall off; it then produces fruit, most of which falls on the ground or is
eaten by birds before it can be picked (McDonough and Braungart, 2002). But the "waste" of the cherry tree isnt wasteful at all: it creates new trees, feeds the birds
and is part of a natural ecological process (McDonough and Braungart, 2002). The ideal for humans is to emulate this sort of natural cycle, rather than what they are doing
now, which is attempt to streamline operations and use less to do more (McDonough and Braungart, 2002). Manufacturing today uses things like just-in-time delivery of parts to keep things
running, rather than having stockpiles of parts to use. This works by making sure that the part gets to the assembler just when he needs it. It cuts down on
inventory and record keeping; this is no doubt the kind of thing McDonough and Braungart mean when they talk about people doing more with less-we are trying to find ways
to reduce cost and waste, eliminate unnecessary inventory and at times cut back on employees to save money; but all of this is artificial and is not the way nature
