believe or not, the symbolic nature of the coyote will always come calling, playing games with ones life. Sam Hunter, in Moores novel, learns this lesson that he somehow chose
to forget. In the following paper we examine the position of Sam Hunter, when he is successful and content, illustrating how coyote comes to him to wreak havoc, an unavoidable
reality for one how has been less than righteous. In this particular series of events we find a great and powerful link with the general theme of the entire book.
The Life of Sam Hunter "A vision quest for young Samson Hunts Alone introduces him to a very unlikely totem: a fat white man in a blue polyester
suit driving a Caddy. Then the boys life starts to get strange" as he is confronted by coyote time and time again (Rose moore_blue.html). He flees to a Montana reservation.
And, he must adapt and change himself in many ways before he feels he has found peace and success. When we see him again he is Sam Hunter and
he lives in Los Angeles, melding in with the population and the society. "Financially and socially secure, Sam Hunter the yuppie insurance salesman bears little resemblance to his former self.
