Challenge of Managing Diversity : In this first chapter, Cox outlines the need for maximizing the human potential n the workforce and the fact that "human capital has taken center
stage" in business strategies (1). Cox emphasizes the dramatic demographic changes that have taken place over the last several decades, particularly in regards to women, to underscore the
point that creating a multicultural work culture--which has long been a stated goal of industry--has proven to be difficult. In this preliminary discussion, Cox lays the groundwork for later chapters.
He defines diversity and then outlines the problems and opportunities connected with diversity. Then, he discusses diversity as a potential performance barrier but also as a value-added activity. Cox makes
the point that diversity aids organizations in becoming flexible and able to change to meet the rapidly changing circumstances of todays business environment (8). As this suggests, he argues that,
