is a loner and a figure who is relatively quiet, speaking little and yet acting perhaps nobly in many instances. There are many ideas concerning the definition of a cowboy
but for the most part they are generally seen as powerful men of the range who are possessed of a strong silence. Two images of cowboys that have been a
part of the American film industry are John Wayne and Jackie Chan. The following paper compares and contrasts the two, with a discussion of how race figures into the image
of the American cowboy as well. Cowboys: John Wayne and Jackie Chan The image of the cowboy to be examined involves
simply looking at two photographs. One is a black and white and depicts John Wayne dressed as a cowboy and is perhaps a photograph that was used to promote a
film. The other one is a color photograph and it depicts Jackie Chan dressed as a cowboy for what appears to be some publicity shot on a red carpet show
of some kind. The point in assessing these photographs is doing so without any preconceived notions concerning the actors, their lives, the films they were in necessarily, but relies on
reading the images seen in the pictures as they relate to the image of a cowboy. In the text The World is a
Text the author notes that, "Reading images tends to be an informal process...we take them in and move on" (Silverman; 360). And, in reading these images, "We each bring to
