and almost self-imposed anguish. It is clearly a romantic ideal that has been used in many stories throughout time. In the film "Shakespeare in Love" we have numerous examples of
courtly love, presenting us with a fairly accurate picture of the power of such a love. In the following paper we first present an examination of the elements which go
into defining courtly love. The paper then discusses the character of Shakespeare in "Shakespeare in Love" as he offers himself up as an accurate picture of a courtly lover.
What is a Courtly Lover? There are many different perspectives in considering what makes a courtly lover. For example, a courtly lover can be a man who is from
humble beginnings, and be passionately in love with a woman who is likely much higher ranking than himself. He often performs some noble deeds for the woman he loves, perhaps
suffering incredible pain or dejection because of the deeds and his love. In addition, the woman can often remain aloof and uninterested in the lover, though she could also remain
aloof due to her station in life and her sense of purity. It is also assumed that he keeps his love for her a secret so that she is not
harmed, though he will herald her with poetry if he is an artistic sort. These are fairly simple definitions, but they help to set the stage for more in-depth examinations
into the notion of courtly love and the courtly lover. In further examining some of the rules of courtly love we turn to some of the definitions provided by
