this story, however, are many examples of courage as the characters face one situation after another. Although many of the situations are perhaps relatively harmless and simple, they are instances
that require courage. The following paper examines the theme of courage in the novel. Courage in "To Kill a Mockingbird" The very first example the reader gets of
courage is in the beginning of the book. It may well be that in this particular illustration of courage, and later simple illustrations, the author is setting the reader up
to understand how courage is a very important element in the development of an individuals character. In the first chapter the reader is introduced to the Radley house, a frightening
house that the children are curious about, but a house they go out of their way to avoid. This house ultimately pulls them in to a position where they
must feel courageous and face their fears. "Dill made a bet with Jem" and "Rather than look like a coward, Jem took the bet to touch the Radley house although
he was really scared to do it. He couldnt allow Dill and Scout to think him a coward because his courage was a source of pride" (Courage Theme In "To
Kill A Mockingbird"). The Radleys would ultimately play a very important part in the novel, and in this humble beginning which illustrates courage the reader is introduced to the children
and the Radleys. The theme of courage as it involved Jem and the Radley house continues in another chapter where Jem realizes his pants have been left at the
Radley house. He is afraid that his father will find out, as they are essentially forbidden to bother the Radleys, and he sucks up the courage to retrieve his pants
