While it was apparently not a novel that was intentionally written concerning the so called "generation X" it is very much a novel that addresses the concerns of that particular generation, according to many reviewers. As such it has been heralded as a brilliant work that urges a generation to examine the world around them and their culture, or as the student requesting this paper notes, "Generation X has been praised as empowering its readers to be critical of contemporary society and culture." The following paper argues otherwise, illustrating how Couplands novel is one that, again as the student requesting this paper notes, "invites its readers into a narcissistic and apolitical state of withdrawal." Couplands Generation X One of the most obvious ways in which this particular novel seems to promote a sense of narcissism involves its obvious "clever" presence. For example, one other author stated how they enjoyed "all the great little neo-logisms printed in the margins of the pages" (Fink). Page after page of the book, in fact perhaps all the pages in the book, have these apparent "neo-logisms" in the margins and they are words, made up names, of particular things in society. In truth, people simply do not talk with such words on any common basis and if anyone does they are clearly self involved people who are absorbed with their own intelligence, importance and cleverness! For example, there are words such as "Brazilification (page 11)" which apparently means "The widening gulf between the rich and the poor and the accompanying disappearance of the middle classes" as seen in the novel and presented by Fink.
