has been characterized by alternating cycles of oppressive regimes and coup detats to overthrow those regimes throughout much of the twentieth century. The 1950s to the 1990s are particularly interesting in that regard. Military officers staged one coup detat after another in the Middle East. One explanation of why this occurred is that the worlds richest industrialized countries, specifically the United States and Russia were the puppeteers behind the curtains, that these countries in fact initially controlled many of these coups. The role of the Western countries involved in this early manipulation of Middle Eastern politics ultimately resulted in festering resentment and this made this region more receptive to Marxist influence. This view is particularly prominent in the Middle East itself. Hassan Hanizadeh of the Tehran Times, for example, contends: "From the 1940s to 1970s, the U.S. and other Western countries staged numerous coups in Middle Eastern countries to impose puppet governments on regional nations in order to further their interests" The subsequent rise of Marxist tendencies in this region reached an explosive height with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Extremist groups evolved that heatedly resented what they viewed as the Wests pillage of their oil reserves and their role in the creation of repressive governments. These groups believe that the West is both directly and indirectly responsible in the oppression and torture that has characterized these governments because they are the ones that have provided the tools needed to facilitate this oppression and torture.
