FORMING A COMMITTEE In first forming a committee it is useful to make the committee up of individuals that are interested in the project. Additionally the group should work well together. For example, Plato advocated grouping together individuals of the same composition. This idea has great merit, because those of like mind can bounce ideas off of each other in order to further their aptitude on a particular subject or committee. The individuals are all on the same path of knowledge, most of whom are already farther along the path of a specific subject, so surrounding their views with those at the same plateau only helps to further their direction. On the other hand, bringing aboard those who are not quite as far along as those already established within the structure -- known as "heterogeneous grouping" (Ediger 1997, 267) -- may serve to introduce new ideas not before considered. So, there is room for both philosophies in this case, as one or the other may be appropriate in a given situation. THE COMMITTEE LEADER How is an effective committee leader determined, and what are the criteria for establishing such? Does the right leadership truly influence the performance of the committee? How essential is good leadership in relation to the performance of the committee as a whole? These represent just some of the concerns experts have discussed as a means by which to ascertain the true benefit of effective and enabling leadership, in this case leadership of a committee.
