The role of a counsellor can vary greatly depending in the environment within which a counsellor is working. It is not unusual to see counsellors used in a wide range
of areas, each of which may have particular requirements of specialities. Counsellors may be found as guidance counsellors in schools, marriage counsellors to aid with relationship issues. Counsellors may
work in their own practices, may be linked to hospital departments or be attached to doctors general practice surgeries (Sanders, 2002). Hough (2010) puts forward a model of counselling which
is aimed at helping and empowering the client to initiate the changes in their life that they wish to make. The role of the counsellor is not to advice or
push the client into making changes, counselling is predominantly a listening activity. Burks and Stefflre (1979) define the function of counselling as; "Counselling denotes a professional relationship between a trained
counsellor and a client. This relationship is usually person-to-person, although it may sometimes involve more than two people. It is designed to help clients to understand and clarify their views
of their lifespace, and to learn to reach their self-determined goals through meaningful, well-informed choices and through resolution of problems of an emotional or interpersonal nature." (Burks and Stefflre 1979:
14) The counsellor listens and asks questions in a confidential setting and a non judgment manner to allow the client to increase their
self realization. When problems are identified the counselling process will allow the client to develop their own solution by considering strategies they may use to improve the situation (Hough, 2010).
Therapeutic counselling is a specific area of practice, undertaken by individuals with specific training (Hough, 2010). In the case of an alcoholic it may be argued that counselling may
