biases, values, beliefs, perceptions, etc. They would be able to treat each individual as an entirely sterile situation, devoid of their own influences. They would be able to
address the individual needs and preferences of the client in a beneficial manner. But this is not a perfect world and the reality is that often the personal values
of the counselor do indeed infringe upon the professional experience of that counselor in a way that influences his/her clients as well. And so, the question becomes given that
this is a predisposed reality, to what extent does this occur and what is the impact? First and foremost, it is important to
recognize that the necessity for keeping the personal values of the counselor separate from the counseling experience is inherently a matter of ethical responsibility (Herring, 2004). That said, it
has also been established that to one degree or another, it is virtually impossible for the counselor to remove entirely their personal biases. Therefore, there is an inherent dilemma
- one in which all counselors must be aptly aware. It is the responsibility of every counselor to be able to recognize and consequently appropriately respond to ethical dilemmas
that may be encountered in the counseling relationship (Herring, 2004). Even experienced counselors must remain aware of this possibility since no counselor is immune to potentially projecting their own
values onto a situation (Herring, 2004). Within the counseling profession, there are multiple codes of conduct that exist (Herring, 2004).
