producers of cotton in the world are the United States, China, Pakistan, and India. Cotton however is more than just an economic commodity, but it is a political one
as well. Therefore, there are many significant political implications that are associated with cotton ginning that provide evidence of the impacts of colonization and globalization.
Pakistan provides an example of a country that is very dependent upon cotton production for its economic stability (Smeda, Inc., 2003). Agriculture comprises a
full 25% of that countrys GDP, and within agriculture, cotton is among the largest crops (Smeda, Inc., 2003). The success or failure of cotton crops in Pakistan affects export
capabilities, which typically comprise more than 60% of the countrys total exports (Smeda, Inc., 2003). Clearly, cotton is integral to the
economic health of Pakistan. However, there are a myriad of factors affecting the cotton market in that country, such as the impact of colonization and globalization. Subsidies have
been an important issue in the cotton industry, and has a significant impact upon Pakistan as well as China and India (Yahoo, Inc., 2003). The issue of subsidies is
just one example of how globalization significantly impacts the cotton trade. World trade talks that recently occurred in Mexico highlight this issue
(Yahoo, Inc., 2003). Cotton traders in both India and Pakistan were not pleased when talks did little to resolve the issue of farm subsidies (Yahoo, Inc., 2003). Together,
