of a new sort of experiment that will allow people inside the mind of another. Through taking a drug she is able to enter into the mind of another and
guide them, helping them to come free of their particular mental bonds. She does this primarily to help a young boy in a coma, but is asked to enter into
the mind of a very disturbed serial killer, Carl (played by Vincent DOnofrio). When entering his mind and thus his world, she wears many costumes, many a form of protection.
The following paper examines the use of costuming by Catherine when entering the killers mind. Costuming in "The Cell" When Catherines character is first seen she is in
a very magical white, non-threatening, and inviting costume for the boy she wishes to save. It is reflective of her pure and helpful spirit or soul and thus serves as
a foundation for understanding how she creates costumes as the story develops in relationship to Carl, the serial killer. It is interesting to note that the movie ends with the
same costume as Catherine is once more, hopefully for the last time, in the mind of the boy again. Catherine first enters the mind of the man and essentially
sees a boy, Carls character as a child. She is dressed in a skirt and a top, very casually, as she would dress perhaps every day in real life. In
this one gets the impression that without knowing who she is encountering she is making herself very real before deciding on costumes for protection, as well as costuming that would
help the person whos mind she is in, like the boy. She is, in other words, going unprotected as herself with no preconceived notions of what to expect. She
