has a long and varied history. It begins in 1935, when the program was first instituted in order to provide benefits to workers and their families in cases where the
worker was no longer able to draw a living wage, such as old age or disability. The benefits paid to the individual would be based mostly upon his or her
employment record, such that the more one had "paid in" in terms of taxes, the more one would be able to receive in payments following retirement or disability. The program
was expanded somewhat in 1965 in order to also provide health insurance benefits to those individuals unable to work or afford private plans; this new subsidiary program, Medicare, is also
governed by the same federal institution that oversees social security, the Social Security Administration. Slide 2 Over the years, the Social Security Program has been amended several
times. 1939: Approval for payouts to workers spouses and children in the event of premature or untimely death (Social Security Administration, 2005). 1950: The first "cost of living" increase is
