go on the executives expense account are a thing of the past, as today, most people are just thankful to have a job. In other words, no one expects a
lot of perks in the 2000s. Still, perhaps the most disturbing and stressful encounters at work have to do with layoffs. One week, someone down the hall gets the
ax, and the next week it is someone closer to ones own work station. Sooner or later, an employee begins to question his or her own job security and even
if one is somewhat confident about their future prospects, other cut backs can hurt morale as well. No one likes to hear that raises or bonuses are frozen. Raises allow
employees to feel successful and affords them the opportunity to stay with one company and move ahead. When people have to leave in order to get higher pay, that hurts
morale. One begins to hear that either someone is leaving the company, or that he or she got fired or that someone is just looking around. This creates a serious
level of discomfort and even the future of the company is challenged by such rumors. Many people do equate downsizing with lay offs. In fact, that is certainly a
part of it, but downsizing also means that there are employees who are left at the companies that have gotten smaller. Some people have to take salary cuts as a
result, which can change lifestyle if employees have become dependent on high salaries and perks. Also, even if employees do not have to make changes in terms of pay, they
most likely will end up having to do more work than usual. It is often the case that employees are laid off and the ones remaining pick up the slack.
