shocking but expected. This paper considers corruption as a cultural tradition, and how gift-giving can be used to take advantage of people in the name of tradition. Discussion The first
prompt for the paper is to consider the assertions made in the text and agree or disagree with them; we will assume that the main assertion is the statement that
corruption has a four-fold cost, damaging political, economic, social and environmental efforts (The corruption FAQ page). In politics, corruption is a major stumbling block to true democracy because when the
democratic system is used for personal gain it loses its legitimacy (The corruption FAQ page). Economically, corruption depletes the wealth of a nation and perverts competition, which tends to deter
foreign investment (The corruption FAQ page). Corruption does its greatest damage by undermining the trust of individuals in their government, their leaders and their political system (The corruption FAQ page).
When people become apathetic, the result is a "weak civil society" that has little defense against despots and dictators (The corruption FAQ page). People who understand the problems often emigrate,
leaving their countrymen to face their corrupt government alone. Finally, in a corrupt system, attention will be paid to environmental problems only if doing so can enrich someone in a
position of responsibility. The student will want to discuss their opinion of these four statements but they seem to be reasonable and any thinking person will have seen enough of
