or more variables. The relationship is called covariation because it finds similarity between the variables. Researchers use a variety of statistical calculations to determine if there is a relationship and
if there is, how strong is that relationship. Correlational studies can be used in a diverse number of settings for many different issues. Whitaker and Hirst (2002) investigated the correlations
between aggressive outbursts and other variables in the environment. John was in this 30s and diagnosed with autistic features and moderate learning disabilities. He lived in a special unit for
people who demonstrated challenging behaviors. About once or twice each week, John would have outbursts that involved self-injury and/or aggression. Infestation revealed that there was little stimulation in his life
but he became upset if his routine was hanged. Even so, nurses believed it was important for John to get out of the unit for walks but that did not
happen very often (Whitaker and Hirst, 2002). The researchers reviewed his files for several months and found there was negative correlation between his going out and his aggressive outbursts. The
files indicated that going out reduced his aggressive outbursts. As the staff made sure John got out for walks on a regular basis, his aggressive outbursts continued to decrease (Whitaker
and Hirst, 2002). The correlational research approach was appropriate because the investigators were trying to determine if there was an event or action that would reduce the patients outbursts.
