some schools succeed regardless of the student population while other fail? And What does it take for successful school reform? In their research, Pechman and King (1993) identified six essential
attributes for successful school reform. Most are similar to the correlates of effective schools identified by Lezotte (1991): 1. Stable and safe school environment: students and staff need to feel
safe in the school. A discipline policy that does not allow bullying is one example of making students feel safe. It also needs to be stable, which has to do
with order. 2. Ongoing support from district staff for reform. It requires support from the top for any school reform projects to be successful. 3. Teacher leaders within the school.
These professionals can be identified quickly. They are able to persuade others to adopt changes and they know their subjects very well. 4. Collaboration and support of the whole faculty.
School-wide changes require the entire faculty to work together towards the same goal. 5. Acceptance and commitment by the faculty to participate in the change process. Change is
never easy and there will always be some who resist the changes. To be successful, the whole faculty needs to make a commitment to school reform and making positive changes
for the students. 6. Principal leader who facilitates the changes and encourages collegiality. Principals are now becoming more like mentors and coaches. They need to act as facilitators rather than
directors. These are the essential factors or attributes of effective school reforms. It will take time to make the changes but they will be worth it. 2. Using
