rehabilitating prisoners, the penal systems and the way they are administered can vary from country to country. In America, correctional facilities have historically been used to confine alleged offenders until
a jury or judge decides the proper course of action for that individual. While it does not always come to fruition, prisons systems are intended train inmates by providing them
opportunities to develop a work ethic, encourage a sense of accountability and self-discipline, and help them adapt to the routine of work and standard living. It is the overall mission
of the penal system to increase their self-worth. This is the true checkpoint for corrections practitioners in preparing released offenders to reenter mainstream society with a real chance of succeeding.
Equally important, this approach provides individuals who might otherwise return to a life of crime with a real alternative--a chance for legitimate employment. In Australia, within the last two
decades, various state governments have reached out to the private sector correctional corporations to build and operate prisons. This subsequently caused several older government-run institutions to be decommissioned. Like the
United States, offenders who are sentenced to any form of detention prisoners or who are held in detention pending trial detainees come within the responsibility of the state and territory
justice system, and the state or territory corrective services. There are no federal prisons and, subject to some differences in practice, federal and state offenders have similar rights and entitlements.
