Introduction The American prison population in private and public institutions has tripled since
1980 (Predergast 7). What we basically have is a growth industry, which still plans expansion. A correction facility, in spite of security efforts is not a safe environment.
The demand for security officers is great, but it does seem to be a profession with a high turn- over rate. Is it possible to predict or determine
why that happens? Since Texas now has the largest penal system in the United States with
over 145,000 beds, full to capacity, and spends two billion dollars a year to operate it (TDOC), lets use the Texas state corrections system as our data base. In
the Texas system, correction officers are only required to be 19 years old and have a GED. Many inmates are older, wiser, and may be more educated than the officers.
It would take a very wise human to not over-react in this situation. A young officer without critical thinking skills and experience may be prone to misjudge
situations and make unwise decisions; unknowingly this may actually provoke violent reactions from inmates, creating an unsafe environment not only for inmates, but for staff as well. This may
then confirm in the officers mind, that the inmate really is an animal and deserves to be treated abusively. Such a mind-set puts this young officer at a disadvantage,
and some inmates may go out of their way to make him miserable in the work environment. Eventually this may wear a young person down, particularly if, due to
