of any organization, advancements in globalization and an increase of social consciousness in regards to social causes have made it essential that organizations engage in ethical business practices. This is
especially true for large corporations who face intense media scrutiny if they engage in unethical practices and get caught. For this reason, most corporations now strategically plan to support social
causes in order to fulfill what is known as the corporate social responsibility. Happily, investing in these social causes can actually benefit the corporation as well through a variety of
means. It is simply a matter of choosing the social causes one will support wisely. This helps the student begin to analyze the best practices in question. Best practices for
choosing social issues to support are offered up by Kotler and Lee in this text "Corporate Social Responsibility" (2004). These practices are reinforced with textual examples of actual organizational scenarios.
For example, the first couple of best practices assert that one should choose only a few social issues to support and that those issues should be a concern in the
communities where one does business (Kotler & Lee, 2004). Starbucks reinforces this example by supporting in a few core social issues such as supporting farmers of shade-grown coffee; obviously, this
is of relevant concern to their coffee-drinking patronage as well. The third best practice indicated in the text is to "choose issues that have synergy with mission, values, products,
and services" (Kotler & Lee, 2004). Starbucks depends upon shade-grown high-quality coffee in order to drive their business model of offering high-quality coffee. Therefore, raising funds to support farmers of
shade-grown coffee (a process that is more time-consuming and thusly less profitable than other methods that produce a lesser quality brew) is in direct accordance with Starbucks mission and values.
