uses five basic stages along with four transition points which culminates in a 9-point ordinal scale (Diessner & Mayton II 869). The stages are heteronomy, instrumentality, mutuality, social systems/conscience and
the principled social contract (869). Kohlbergs theory suggests that what is important is that justice increases along with the development of moral judgment (869). The point is that as one
goes through the various stages of morality, their sense of fairness increases. Moral development is something that escalates across time, and while different people will reach different stages at different
times in their lives, it is safe to say that very young people are not at the higher levels of this model. Of course, some individuals may reach a high
chronological age, but never really fully develop morally. Morality is important for daily living but also important in terms of business. Business ethics may rest upon principles as opposed to
being results oriented. In other words, instead of looking at the outcome--success, money, reputation--an individual will want to look at what is morally right. Of course, this is sometimes difficult
to discern. Is the right thing to do something that goes to individual reputation or is it related to something else? Utilitarianism is a theory that a student writing on
this subject should certainly explore. Central to utilitarianism is the premise that it is ideal to achieve the greatest happiness for the greatest number (McLeish 768). This
philosophy has been criticized for many reasons but a major area of concern is how one can measure happiness to begin with. One problem is demonstrated by an example. If
