as important in the general environment as it is to a corporate environment, and in both, politics play a role. In comprehending corporate political culture, it pays to explore the
concepts individually, and then as one idea. When evaluating just what culture is, what corporate culture is, and then finally what corporate political culture is, there will be differences of
opinion. Tunick (1995) for example says: "But corporate culture--and political culture--is really white male culture" (p.82). One may view the entire society as being one that is dominated by middle
aged white males. Yet, there are many other ways of looking at corporate culture. II. Corporate Culture The term corporate culture, or organizational culture, is often used and
misused, but what is it really? Smith (1998) claims that the fundamental difference that exists to distinguish corporate culture from societal culture is essentially that corporate culture is prefaced on
"the visible practices of an organization, and may be consciously changed; national culture, on the other hand, may change little, if at all, over time" (1998, p.60). Smith claims
that managers have a difficult task if they want to change the organizational culture and that this is especially true when there are regional variances, such as in the case
of the multinational corporation. In order to change culture, one must be able to first classify it and define it even more precisely. Schein (1985 cited in Smith, 1998) provides
a classification paradigm that may be used in the evaluation of culture. It includes assumptions and values, as well as artifacts (1998). In utilizing the authors definition,
