complain about the problem, and they sometimes take it out on their employers. They expect employers to pick up the slack, and not cut hours. They want their employers to give them better health insurance coverage, not cut coverage so that the bosss premium goes down. While some of these feelings arise in times of financial stress, is it reasonable? What ethical obligations do organizations have to employees and their families when times are tough due to economic downturns? Do these obligations apply to all members of an organization equally? Why or why not? On one hand, businesses are alive simply to make profit. They must answer to their shareholders. Employees, on the other hand, are mere helpers in the businesss quest to make more and more profit. Although this is the case, and what capitalism used to be thought as, there have been changes ideologically in the workplace and in the society. In fact, the movement toward workplace values started about a decade ago when people began to look for meaning amidst decreased job security and corporate downsizing (Horner, 2002). However, workplace spirituality issues have only recently taken on a higher profile and it still represents a minority of businesses (2002). Although that is the case, there is still at least some attention to the feelings and needs of employees and a bit more reluctance to let employees go. It is not only a legal issue--former employees have sued due to age discrimination for example--but there is are true moral underpinnings of these large conglomerates today. In fact, one can see that the workplace is no longer as it was when business first began to change in the 1960s and 1970s. The womens and civil rights movements were in full swing.
