Friedmans view is adamant in that the existence of the corporation is merely to make money, period (Shaw & Barry, 2004). Friedman has a good point. After all, corporations owe
their shareholders all of their efforts to assure profitability. Yet, while that is true, there is a sense that corporations should not hurt the environment, or exacerbate problems in the
third world, by doing business. Several issues do crop up on the global front in respect to doing business in an ethical manner. Is it ethical to export capital
for production abroad? Is it ethical to export commodities that have been banned in the United States? Finally, is it ethical to export products that can be potentially misused? At
first glance, answers come to mind, but these are questions that should be explored with a great deal of thought. The first question goes to exporting product and producing products
abroad. This question, on the surface, may not appear to have moral implications. Why should a company not produce items abroad? However, when it comes to morality, some believe that
it is better to keep jobs in the United States than ship them overseas. This is because many people believe that companies should take care of their own. An example
is that the automobile manufacturing business, and the steel business, are industries that have experienced problems. Some claim that the problems with layoffs have to do with NAFTA. Large corporations
can access cheap labor in other countries and that is good for investors. Yet, some believe that corporations are indebted to other stakeholders and should not send jobs abroad.
