is important that workers do their best. Corporate culture also plays a role in an organizations approach to customer relations as well as social responsibility. To some extent, a firms
commitment to certain causes can enhance a culture that is perhaps not very refined. The term corporate culture, or organizational culture, is often used and misused, but what is
it really? Smith (1998) claims that the fundamental difference that exists to distinguish corporate culture from societal culture is essentially that corporate culture is prefaced on "the visible practices of
an organization, and may be consciously changed; national culture, on the other hand, may change little, if at all, over time" (1998, 60). Corporate culture then is something that
is constructed by the owners and employees of a firm. Some of it is created by rules and dictums and other parts of the culture emerge on their own.
Corporate culture often varies by industry. There is a certain corporate culture for example at hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowes and they do differ of course from company
from company. Similarly, in the advertising or insurance industries, each company culture is unique, but the preponderance of conventions and trends is often similar. In the realm of home improvement,
it seems that Ace Hardware Store possesses a distinct corporate culture. Ace Hardware boasts a staff of greater than five thousand people throughout the nation and is dedicated to working
