sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering" (Dictionary, 2010). Solomon (1998) notes that even with the rise in interest of
ethics that aspect of compassion remains overlooked and that there is a need for increased compassion in business, is the levels of cooperation between businesses. However, it is difficult in
any competitive environment (Solomon, 1998). When considering the way in which action may emerge within any organization may be argued that even the most commercial organizations have the potential
to be seen in a spiritual manner, if they show signs of compassion. The social strategy adopted by Starbucks may be seen as a significant departure from the commercial practices
that the organization is associated with, including predatory competitive strategies. The strategy has included some significant investments that have taken both time and resources that is to seen a significant
shift in 2003/4, where the direction and arguably be internal viewer corporate social responsibility appears to have shifted. In 2004 there was the
launch of Starbucks Coffee Agronomy Company S.R.L, this is a firm that has been set up as a wholly owned subsidiary of Starbucks located in Costa Rica; this is a
farmer support centre (Starbucks, 2005). This has a duel role, it helps the farmers, but in doing so it also helps Starbucks ensure a reliable supply of quality coffee beans.
The aim of the centre is to support sustainability and give advice and support to farmers in a range of aspects, from avoid soil erosion to planting management (Starbucks, 2005).
