problem A.Pathophysiology Cardiovascular health, of course, is determined by a number of factors. Some of these factors are
genetic but others are behavioral. Smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, diets high in saturated fats and stress all add to our propensity for developing cardiovascular disease. So too, however,
do factors such as bacterial infection (Mathews and Thornton, 1997). There is a predominant belief that the causative factors of the
largest number of heart attacks is that heart disease is associated with the wide scale accumulation of plaque in the walls of the arteries which narrow the blood channels and
eventually choke off the flow of blood entirely, starving the heart muscle to death (Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week, 2006). There is growing evidence, however, that such wide scale
blockages are responsible for only a relatively small percentage of heart attacks. It is the smaller, more numerous, blockages consisting of plaque which are responsible for the larger percentage
of heart attacks (Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week, 2006). Plaque causes atherosclerosis, otherwise known as hardening of the arteries (Obesity, Fitness
& Wellness Week, 2006). These plaque blockages can be either hard and consolidated or soft and malleable (Haney, 1999). It is the soft and malleable blockages which present
the most concern. These blockages (termed vulnerable plaque) have a tendency to rupture, setting off a chemical chain reaction which culminates in many cases with a big blood clot
(Haney, 1999). When such a blood clot forms in one of the three main arteries which supply blood to the heart, the outcome can be dire. Approximately one-half
