Gondicas & Vernay, 2010). Castoriadis promotes the project of individual and collective autonomy. He describes this as a social-historical project that can be achieved based on the activity
of individuals and peoples combined with their understanding, determination, and imagination. This project is a society where all citizens are equal, where each citizen has the opportunity to legislate, govern,
judge and finally to institute a society (Escobar, Gondicas & Vernay, 2010). He explains that he must return to Ancient Greek words. Oikos is the private sphere
such as the house, ekklesia is the assembly of the people, which is the public sphere, and agora which is the marketplace or the meeting place (Escobar, Gondicas & Vernay,
2010). Totalitarianism merges all three spheres. In liberal oligarchy, the public spheres are dominated by a part of the private sphere or a part of the public sphere but
the public character of the public sphere is eliminated. Castoriadis argues that democracy is the way to work with the three different spheres. In this approach, the public sphere
is truly public (Escobar, Gondicas & Vernay, 2010). To do so, everyone must participate in managing the affairs of the community. But, this is impossible unless there is an
effective political equality (Escobar, Gondicas & Vernay, 2010). The project of autonomy is about helping people participate more effectively. Castoriadis asserts that democracy is not possible because it
