Essay / Research Paper Abstract
10 pages in length. Hundreds of millions of years of oceanic history teeters on the verge of permanent extinction. Because of the detrimental effects of pollution, overfishing, tourism and drastic environmental changes, the world's coral reefs are fighting for their very existence. That coral reefs are an ecosystem all unto themselves, their rapid decline does not only influence their survival, but also that of myriad other species as well. Significant efforts are being made as a means by which to salvage what is left and perhaps repair what has already been damaged. The writer discusses ecosystems as they relate to coral reefs. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

reefs are fighting for their very existence. Coral reefs are an ecosystem all unto themselves, their rapid decline does not only influence their survival, but also that of myriad
other species as well. Significant efforts are being made as a means by which to salvage what is left and perhaps repair what has already been damaged. This
paper will attempt to address the ecological importance of coral reef ecosystems, discusses their properties, as well as comment upon preservation efforts. "The fragile ecosystem of the 6,500 species
of corals that protect the coastal areas from damage by storms and erosion and serve as a breeding ground for many species of marine creatures is being damaged by mining,
sedimentation, diving, pollution and many other human activities" (Sieswerda et al 16). I. CORAL REEF SYSTEMS DEFINED Of all the environmentally diverse life forms on this planet, the oceans
coral reefs represent some of the most complicated. Comprised of a number of plant and aquatic life, coral reefs are "one of the riches and most complex ecosystems in
the ocean" (Anonymous #1 PG). In spite of the fact that many people think coral reefs are some sort of rock formation, they are actually made up of polyps,
which are the skeletal remains of millions of the particular type of small animal. Number well over two thousand, the various kinds of coral reefs exist in tropical settings,
directly off the shore. The clear, shallow waters that support this ecosystem play a significant role in the overall expansion and survival of the reefs, inasmuch as they help
to support the myriad plant and animal life that, themselves, survive because of the reefs. "Reefs need to be managed place by place, and while each place is different,
