on the World Wide Web are copyrighted. Of course, there are web sites set up with materials that are offered free without fear of copyright infringement. Yet, it takes a
knowledgeable teacher to be able to find such items. First, what is copyright exactly? A definition from the Online Ethics Center is as follows: "A legal right (usually
of the author or composer or publisher of a work) to exclusive publication production, sale, distribution of some work. What is protected by the copyright is the "expression," not the
idea. Notice that taking anothers idea is plagiarism, so copyrights are not the equivalent of legal prohibition of plagiarism" ("Online Ethics Center," 2008). While the term is understood in the
writing realm, as writers are careful not to violate the law, librarians and teachers are often frustrated at their inability to share information. Copyright is particularly difficult to uphold
in the context of the public library. Libraries help to educate the public and they are there for the publics use. Children are encouraged to visit libraries so they will
be able to access information without cost. In recent years, libraries have expanded their services to include computers, digital information and daily newspapers. They offer entertainment choices sometimes akin to
what Blockbuster or Netflix might. In fact, libraries have expanded so much in the realm of data, they are challenged in respect to methods needed to preserve it fairly. Copyright
