Balancing copyright law and the goals and objectives of a school library media center can be
a challenging task to say the least. As Gallaway and Kinnear (2004, 467) observe, "copyright law has represented an uneasy balance between monopoly power and economic efficiency". For
media centers, however, the problems relating to copyright law relate to much more than strict economics. The function of a library/media center, after all, is to make information available to
those that are interested in it in the most expedient and easily digested form. Numerous items such as works of art, writing, and music are copyrighted. What this
means is that it is illegal for these items to be reproduced without authorization from the copyright holder. As Neal (2002, 48) observes, globalization and the ever-quickening fight over
property rights has coupled with new laws and legislation to put librarians at the "frontlines of the intellectual property wars". Ever since the
introduction of the copy machine and the tape recorder the reproduction of that information has been of extreme concern. Signs of copy machines notifying faculty and students of copyright
provisions have been just one of the precautions that have been taken (Crawford, 2005). While it was unlikely that material could be easily reproduced from items on loan or
made available through the media center when that reproduction involved complex and tedious procedures, the advent of these miracles of technology made reproduction as easy as touching a button.
