White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella. Nate Cabot is a senior at the New York University film school; for his senior project, he produced a forty-five minute animated
feature entitled Cinderfella and the Gay Giants, which has become an underground hit at NYU. Cabot plans to bring the film to the festival in hopes that Miramax or
another independent will distribute it nationally. Disney is concerned that this "rip off" of Snow White and Cinderella will affect the companys wholesome image, especially since Cinderella II has
recently been released, and executives want to legally prohibit Cabot from screening the film at the festival next month. The very essence of
copyright is to protect "original works of authorship in any tangible medium" (Lans Retsky, 2000, p. PG). Does this definition apply to parodies and the manner by which they
mimic the original source? Clearly, copyright infringement is not to be taken lightly, inasmuch as the nature of copyright laws seek to protect those who rightfully own original works.
However, to what extent do such laws address the association with parody creators and, therefore, render them exempt from following the statute? "Once copyright rights have been established,
the law prohibits unauthorized copying of the protected materials. It is important for the student to realize that while a work must be sufficiently original in order to receive
copyright protection -- and the courts interpret what is meant by sufficiently original - the level of originality necessary usually is fairly low" (Lans Retsky, 2000, p. PG). Based
