There is some scientific evidence to demonstrate that people have been utilizing copper for some 11 thousand years ("Its Elemental - The Element Copper," 2006). One recent find is that in Iraq there are copper beads which are thought to be around 10 thousand years old (Emsley, 2001). The name "copper" originated from the island of Cyprus, where it is thought that the people of early Rome obtained the element ("Its Elemental - The Element Copper," 2006). Today, copper ore is found in various locations throughout the world, but most remarkably in Canada, the United States, Chile, Zaire, Zambia and Peru ("Its Elemental - The Element Copper," 2006). Copper is an element found on the periodic table. It is found above sliver (Ag) and just below sliver is gold (Au); these three metals have very similar properties (Stewart, 2005). As a substance it has an important role in chemistry. It is an orange-gold metal and is considered to fall into group 11 (Emsley, 2001). It is part of a group known as coinage metals (Emsley, 2001). Indeed, in combination with other ingredients, coins are made from copper. It is rust resistant as it resists both air and water (Emsley, 2001). Today, copper is used in the electrical industry ("Its Elemental - The Element Copper," 2006). Many are familiar with the uses of copper wire. In fact, it is considered to be perfect for electrical wiring because it is extremely conductive (Emsley, 2001).
