Nervous System (CNS) is comprised on ones brain and spinal cord and the CNS "controls most of the functions in your body" (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2005). The spinal cord is
about 15 to 17 inches long, stretching from the base of the brain to the bodys midsection, waist (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2005). This cord, which is "composed of long nerve
fibers" (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2005) is what carries messages to and from the brain telling the body what to do (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2005). The nerve fibers go into the
nerve roots that are found between the vertebrae (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2005). The backbone has 33 bones that encase the spinal cord (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2005). These nerves spread out
to other parts of the body (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2005). Christopher Reeve brought spinal cord injuries to the publics attention. As we may remember, Reeve was thrown from his horse
leaving him paralyzed from his neck down. It seems to take a famous person to contract a disease or suffer such devastating injuries before we all realize we absolutely must
find treatments or preventions or whatever is called for. Spinal cord injuries are not that uncommon, about 11,000 Americans suffer acute traumatic spinal cord injuries each year (Mayo Clinic Staff,
2005). They may be caused by motor accidents, violence sports and falls (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2005). Fries (2005) reported that about 41 percent of spinal cord injuries are related
