Once parents have worked into the routine of caring for and addressing the necessities of special needs children, it is just a matter of time before they succumb to some level of stress associated with the tight focus their lives have taken upon this little individual who requires much more dedicated attention than children without special needs. Variants of understanding all the myriad elements that go into recognizing, implementing and dealing with the everyday requirements of special needs children is quite a challenge for parents. From common daily tasks of hygiene, feeding and exercise to supplementary academic programs, parents must become quick studies whereby they gather and put into practice what is appropriate for their respective kids. School, for example, can present a particular challenge for parents who incorrectly believe the school system takes all responsibility for providing special instruction, when in actuality it is a dual effort between parents and teachers. Once this is realized, the parents must become somewhat proficient in adapted instructional programs so they can assist with such aspects as homework (Patten, 1994; Bryan et al, 2004; Cooper et al, 1994). Reaching the special needs student requires considerably more effort in order for that child to excel at what other students have less difficulty achieving. The extent to which every aspect of the learning experience should be orchestrated specifically toward the childs capacity for instruction is both grand and far-reaching; that the adapted approach to homework reflects an equally critical component as in-class lessons speaks to the need for parental extra curricular involvement when striving ...
