One particular cooperative learning strategy that has been proven to be quite beneficial is that of the Student Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD). This noteworthy approach, which was realized at Johns Hopkins University, utilizes several small groups comprised of people who have varying degrees of aptitude. The individuals within each of these groups form a significantly stronger bond together than they do on their own; as a result, the students are afforded a much more in depth view of the mathematics lesson. It goes without saying that those students who have a better understanding of the material are responsible for assisting those who are less familiar (Nath et al, 1996, p. 117). Cooperative learning is a great benefit to the overall method of teaching. By its very principle, it enables students to flourish within the academic system by implementing a balanced degree of separate and assembled interaction.
