that the greatest story of rebellion and hope ever offered to humanity is the story of Jesus Christ. The following discussion of Cool Hand Luke specifically focuses on this symbolism
and the ways in which the film follows the Gospel of Mark. The movie includes a direct reference to the Gospel of Luke. Dragline (one of the other convicts)
comments in amazement at Lukes ability to bluff at poker, "Nothin. A handful of nothin" (Dirks). Luke responds, "Yeah well, sometimes nothin can be a real Cool Hand" (Dirks). Luke
1:37 reads, "For with God, nothing shall be impossible" and Lukes prisoner number is 37" (Dirks). Despite this reference, Marks Gospel is more appropriate for this discussion because Marks version
of Jesus life and ministry is the oldest and provides the text on which the other synoptic gospel accounts are based (Dewey 495). Cool Hand Luke is set in
the deep South in the late 1940s and begins with Luke Jacksons arrest. He is drunk and has cut the heads off of parking meters with a pipe cutter. Each
time he cuts off another meters, the "red, two-hour time limits VIOLATION warning pops up," which offers a comment on the illegal nature of Lukes activity (Dirks). Luke is wearing
his habitual good-natured grin when he is arrested. For this damage to municipal property, Luke is sentenced to two-years labor on a chain gang. Reviewer Tim Dirks points out that
the early scene in which Luke and three other newly-arrived prisoners are indoctrinated into life at this Southern prison ahs been compared to Christs "appearance before Pontius Pilate" (Dirks). However,
