a financial analyst with an investment banking group headquartered in New York City. His companys main offices formerly were located on the 109th floor of the second of the
Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, and he had arrived for work early on the day of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
Well educated and holding an MBA degree from Harvard, John listened to warnings of persistent psychological symptoms in the days following the attacks. Those warnings were for
others, however. It was Johns position that if he was aware of the possibility of lingering problems following the attacks, then he could be on guard against them and
take steps to correct them. "Taking steps," in Johns perspective, was to work it out for himself, face the reality of what happened and then get on with life.
No excuses. Johns Experience Because his office was located in the second tower to collapse, John had more time than some of
his colleagues in the first tower to escape from what would become known later as the worst attack of any kind against America. People in the second tower had
become aware that something terribly wrong had happened in its sister tower; when the second plane struck the second tower, there was much less confusion among occupants of the second
tower as to what they should do. John did not immediately take to the stairway exit, but instead acted on his feelings of
responsibility for others in the company. He had full intention of leaving right away, but first he made the rounds of the companys offices to ensure that others were
